April 2010 – Mike Kirkeby

The third member of the Big Band’s 100 anniversary committee is Gale Pifer.  Gale has provided vision for the Band regarding how the centennial celebration is to be structured and carried out.  Gale has especially been working on a ‘show’ to commemorate the anniversary as well as promoting Masonry and the Shrine.  Gale has taken it upon himself to write the script, set the staging, sound and lighting.  He has also enlisted other Big Band members to help with music arrangement and song selections.  This production will showcase 100 years of music and will contain marches, big band songs, television songs, Disney songs and rock songs.  The celebration and big production show is tentatively scheduled to be debuted during the same weekend as the Fall Ceremonial (11/06/2010).  But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; let’s share some history and memories of the Big Band which Gale has provided…

Today the El Riad Big Band is actually several bands. There is the 35 member concert band, a Swing Band, 18-piece big dance band, a Dixieland unit, a brass group and the latest musical unit, “Last Call,” a rock band.

Musicians over the years have included both professional and amateur players. The annuals of the band includes Dan Dedrick, who played with both John Philip Sousa and Karl King, the march king; Paul Hoy who traveled with several circuses; Jim Kirkeby and Lowell Arwood, both whom played with military bands; several led their own dance bands, such as Wallace Johnson and his Wally Jerome Orchestra; scores of college and high school music teachers and numerous players who continued their love of music by digging out from hall closets and attics old high school and college horns.

Twice the El Riad Big Band was chosen as the official Imperial Band, the national Shrine organization. A song, “The El Riad March,” was even composed honoring the band. The band, like so many other organizations, has had it’s ups-and-downs. After the 40’s and 50’s ended, and with it the dozens of dance bands that toured the area, membership in the El Riad Big Band declined. The wave of rock and roll music with its emphasis on guitar and stringed instruments, plus vocals, left the traditional march and parade band with fewer and fewer members.

Willard Feifer was instrumental in building the band to today’s 58 members.  He spearheaded having the band play for dances at the old “Elmwood Hall,” a revamped World War II dance hall located near the Sioux Falls Airport. Those dances were moved to the Arkota Ballroom, today’s location of the El Riad Shrine Temple, in 1974.  Feifer was credited with putting together the first “Parade of Music” in 1978. The “Parade of Music” featured all the units of El Riad’s Big Band. For two years the event was held at the Isaac Walton Clubhouse. In 1980 the “Parade of Music” was moved to the Arkota, thus the El Riad Big Band became the first Shrine unit to have a function in the “new” Shrine center.

Band member Wally Johnson was responsible for putting in motion the steps that eventually saw the Shrine buying the Arkota. It was during a Wednesday night polka dance at the old Arkota Ballroom that then ballroom manager Mag Hansen came up to Wally and said: “Well, it’s about over. Mrs. Archer is gonna sell the ballroom.” Mrs. Archer and her husband operated a series of ballrooms all over the Midwest.  The El Riad Shrine, realizing that the Masonic Temple was becoming too crowded with Masonic functions, had explored the possibility of purchasing some land near where the Moose Club is located today and building a Shrine building. Wally informed Loren Eggebraaten, who was the incoming Potentate, of Mrs. Archer’s decision to close the Arkota and sell it. Eggebraaten and then Potentate Curtis Kuehn wasted little time in contacting Mrs. Archer and very soon the title was transferred and the historic old ballroom is now home to El Riad Shriners.

A story which has become legendary with the band is the time in Minneapolis when “an inspection” was held of the three bands in competition. “Prior to playing, the band was told to assemble for inspection,” remembers Tom Long. A Marine major was to “inspect” the band. “One of our band members was found to have “fuz on his fez,” another had a string hanging on his coat and one had brown shoes on with black pants.” The El Riad band outplayed the others in competition, but lost out because of the inspection.

Today the El Riad Big Band continues the tradition started in 1910.  It continues to evolve, both in membership and scope. As the oldest uniformed unit in El Riad, the El Riad Big Band deserves recognition not only for providing a wide variety of music, but also continuing to expand and forge new musical paths. The “Last Call” rock band is an example. It’s quite possible that the band may decide to offer a country-western unit, a polka band or small jazz combo in the future. We encourage any Mason who has does or ever have played a musical instrument to contact us. Not a Mason, no problem – we’ll help you become one. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the El Riad Big Band.

March 2010 – Mike Kirkeby

I joined El Riad Shrine and the El Riad Shrine Band at the Spring Ceremonial in 1970 when the Ceremonials were held at the Sioux Falls Coliseum, and the Band was situated in the Orchestra Pit.  Many things have happened throughout the life of the Band, and I would like to mention a few facts and share a few stories.

The Band was organized on December 6, 1910, and went through sort of reorganization in the 50's because of dwindling membership and participation, but has continued on.  Over the years, we've had several directors.  Some for short term and a few for several years.  Willard Fejfar was probably the director for the longest period.  He took over in early 1970 and continued until his death in 1994.

In 1980, we were able to contract for the Arkota Ballroom (now the Shrine Center).  In 1981, the Shrine purchased the Arkota and our Parade of Music was the first Shrine event to be held there.  We sold 868 tickets, a sold out crowd.

The first engagement I had with the Band was rehearsal at the Ramada Inn in NW Sioux Falls.  Here I met Don Leetch and Art Ford, both long time members of the Band.  These two introduced themselves to me as Dog Food salesmen in town for an Alpo conference.  They even went so far as to describe the nutritional value of Alpo to further convince me.  After some time, I found out that the insurance adjustor (Art) could really make a trombone sing (in between jokes) and the National Guardsman (Don) could get more music out of his tuba than anyone imagined possible.  When in a parade and the band wasn't playing, you might hear a dog bark or a horse whinny...and it would be coming from Don’s tuba.

At one of the Midwest's held in Sioux Falls, we decided that we would start competition for all Shrine Bands attending.  Willard (Fejfar) lined up three or four judges; all connected in some way to the music departments in area colleges.  It so happened that we won the competition but some other Bands that it was fixed.  So, when the Midwest was held in Minneapolis, the Bands weren't judged strictly by music, but prior to playing went through a full fledged Military inspection performed by two full time Marine Majors, along with two full time Marine First Sergeants.  We stood at attention for this inspection which didn't set to well with some of our members.  Max Christal (trombone) was a retired Army Major.  Don Leetch was still in the Guard; and there were others that didn't join the Shrine to perform military service.  One of our members was gigged for "Fuzz on his Fez"; another had a "rope" hanging on his jacket; several had unpolished shoes.  But one (I won't mention his name) had brown shoes with black pants.  There were more.  We scored well with music, but got beat out by the inspection.  The Band competition has since gone away, not especially because of the inspections, but because there aren't many Bands left in the Midwest Association.  That's why we're always looking for new members.

- Tom Long, trombone and Big Band Secretary and Treasurer from 1972-2009.

February 2010 – Mike Kirkeby

As you may have heard from my previous Cactus submissions, 2010 marks the 100th year of the Big Band.  With that being said, we’re going to change the content of our Cactus submissions.  Instead of the usual information about what we’ve done and what we have coming up, we’re going to share stories from Band members who have fond memories of the Big Band.  Below is the first submission for 2010:

Nobles, 2010 is finally here and that means that your Big Band Unit is 100 years old!  This year is going to be a huge year for the Big Band, with the weekend of the 2010 Fall Ceremonial being the climax of the celebration.  Stay tuned to your Cactus for more information throughout the year.  We’re going to alter the content of our monthly Cactus submissions this year to do some story telling that Big Band member have of the first 100 years.  To kick off our year-long celebration, I’d like to start by sharing some memories by Bob Miller, the chairman of the Big Band 100th Year Anniversary Committee.  Bob currently resides in Clarks Grove, MN, and is very active in the Big Band’s activities.

There were many memorable occasions experienced with our Big band of course.  I attended nearly all of the Mid-wests, as well as did our other “old – timers,” and a good time was had by all.  I have visited all of the other Temples hosting the Midwest at least twice and perhaps in some cases three times.

Two occasions especially stand out and were to do with our Band’s most “humor man” (Don Leetch.  Everyone will agree with that statement).

We’re housed in the college dormitory at Duluth, home of the AAD Temple, with exception of some of our members who brought their wives.  They received better accommodations at the Holiday Inn.  As a result, we used the Holiday Inn lobby as the focal meeting place.  A young gal walked through the lobby with a small dog.  Our Don Leetch very capably sounded and impersonated a larger dog imitating a so-called dog fight.  This took the gal by surprise and assumed “the other dog” for real, causing her to break into a run to “get away” from any confrontation.  Obviously we all broke in with laughter.

After this episode, Willard Fejfar, our Director suggested we strike up a tune.  Hearing him say this, the motel manager promptly came out and blurter “you can’t do that here” (with the thought of disturbing his guests) and Willard said “oh yes we can” and immediately gave us a down-beat.  We were off and rolling!  Subsequently, the manager of the bar came out saying “I like what I’m hearing, each of you come into the lounge and have a drink on me!”  We did, and continued to play while killing time to load onto our Band Wagon to play elsewhere.

The Bar Manager then asked where we were staying.  We told him (at the college dorm, of course).  He asked about our plans for the evening, we had none.  He replied that he had a contract with another musician that night but said he’d simply pay him off if we would provide the music entertainment there and that we could cancel our dorm reservation; he’d make the necessary arrangements to house us in the Holiday Inn that night.  Did we agree?  Sure we did.

The other episode took place in the parking lot behind the Met Stadium when we attended the Midwest in Minneapolis, home of Zurah Temple.  While we patiently stayed on our Band Wagon awaiting the be placed in the designated “spot” for the parade on that Saturday morning, Abu Behr and their horse Patrol of Sioux City Temple came by.  Don Leetch impersonated the impatience of another horse and the horses of the patrol “spooked” and caused a panic in the horse patrol, a logical problem.  As always, a good time was had by all.

The Big Band is pleased to report a successful fundraiser, which occurred at the Shrine Center on 10/24.  Our annual DNR fundraiser brought nearly 300 people in the doors for a night of socializing and dancing.  We would like to thank all Shrine units and individuals who helped make our fundraiser a successful event.  Several Big Band members as well as friends and family members made our fundraiser possible.  Thanks to all of those involved.  All indications point to a continued partnership with DNR as dates are already being discussed for a 2010 dance.

A handful of Big Band members, and their ladies, helped serve at the November Ladies Luncheon on November 3rd at the Masonic Center.  Nobles George Gulson, LaVerne Pinney, Don Dummermuth and Gale Pifer (as well as their ladies) rolled up their sleeves to help out.  Please see the picture of our happy crew after work had completed.

The Big Band has been busy and has a full calendar for the remainder of 2009…

-         A good handful of Big Members made the trip to Rochester, MN this year to partake in the annual MSA convention.  This year’s attending members included: LaVerne Pinney, Mike Kirkeby, Jim Kirkeby, George Gulson, Gale Pifer, Bob Miller, Tom Long, Ken Rahn, Matt Johnson, Mark Johnson, Wally Johnson, Doug Lindner, Don Briggs, Gene Bennett and Dave WegnerA special thanks goes out to our long-time driver LaVerne Pinney.  LaVerne was kind enough to pull our trailer all the way to Rochester and pull us throughout the weekend.  Mr. Pinney has indicated that he would like this to be his ‘last ride’ with the Big Band.  Thanks for your help throughout the years.  This also brings to light that we need a new driver, and equally as important, a driver with a vehicle that can handle our ‘big rig’.  Any Shriner that would have the interest and equipment to handle the job; please contact Mike Kirkeby at (605) 323-7919.

-         Band Members took part in 2 parades, an afternoon of traveling to various locations around the town to play and a Swing Band concert in the motel courtyard.

-         The Rock Band was asked to perform at this year’s Augustana Shrine Football game on 09/26 where we performed for about an hour before the game started.  We were set up right inside the gates on the west side of the new Kirkeby-Over Stadium and gained some great exposure for our new group.

-         The 3rd annual DNR fundraiser was held on 10/24 at the Shrine Center.

-         The Big Band is slated to serve during the November Ladies Luncheon.

-         A lot of work is being put into the Big Band’s 100th year anniversary celebration, which will occur in 2010.  This celebration, headed by Bob Miller, Tom Long and Gale Pifer, is starting to take form.  The group is moving forward on:

o       Recording a CD comprised of songs from each of our groups

o       Assembling a historical musical production of the Big Band

o       Creating printed memorabilia of the band’s history

o       Possibly playing some hymns during church services for nearby churches

-         The Big Band will hold our annual Christmas Party on Friday night (11/20) at Champps Sports Bar and Grill; and will participate the following day in the Fall Ceremonial.  Following the first and third sections, we will hold our annual stated meeting to take care of necessary business and elect new officers.  The Big Band is happy to announce the creation of new member Chad StonerChad has been an important addition to the Rock Band as our group’s drummer, welcome to the El Riad and Big Band family.

-         We will wrap up 2009 with our annual brass concert in the Empire Mall.  We will stroll the halls of the Empire Mall on 12/19 between 2:00 and 3:00 PM and play some tradition Christmas songs.

Another great year is nearly in the books.  We look forward to 2010 where we will celebrate our 100th year as a unit (the oldest unit of El Riad).

September 2009 – Mike Kirkeby

The Big Band is in high gear in preparation for some large events on the horizon.  We held our first DNR fundraiser committee meeting on 07/23 to lay the ground work for the 10/24 dance.  For those unfamiliar with this event, this is our third annual fundraiser dance featuring DNR, one of the area's best dance bands.  Tickets will soon be available for $10 in advance or $12 at the door on the day of the event.  Tickets may be purchased from any Big Band member, any area Lewis Drug Store, The Pizza Inn or the Shrine Center.  Doors open at 7:00 PM and the band starts at 8:00.  Proceeds from this fundraiser help fund Big Band activities.  Please contact Matt Johnson at (605) 940-4202 if you have any interest in purchasing a table for this event.

The Big Band has also been working hard on our 100th anniversary celebration.  2010 will mark the 100-year anniversary of the El Riad Big Band (El Riad's oldest running unit).  We plan to make the most of this occasion by putting together a program, recording a CD, playing a religious concert as well as possibly putting together a commemorative book of pictures and stories regarding our first 100 years of existence.  Nobles Bob Miller, Gale Pifer and Tom Long have been spearheading these initiatives.  Please reach out to one of these Nobles if you have any questions, comments or interest in this celebration.

Aside from these larger events, the Rock Band will continue to rehearse at the Shrine Center on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.  We took June and July off, but are starting up again in August.  Look for the Rock Band at the annual Shrine Football Game.  We'll be providing entertainment at the new Auggie stadium, prior to the start of the game.  We will also represent El Riad at the Midwest by pulling our large trailer to Rochester to participate in the parades.  The Big Band will hold our annual Christmas Party the night before the Fall Ceremonial.  After the first and third sections of the Fall Ceremonial, we will be holding our annual stated meeting to elect officers and tend to our normal business.  To wrap up 2009, we plan to play Christmas Music in the Empire Mall some weekend in December.

August 2009 – Mike Kirkeby

The Big Band started out our summer schedule by participating in two parades.  On June 13th, the Big Band took 11 members to Hills, MN to participate in the 'Friendship Days Parade'.  The following Saturday, we participated in the annual Shrine Parade, which was held in Hartford, SD.  Fifteen Big Band members collaborated on our big trailer to play our music.

Unfortunately, the Big Band is sad to report that two of our long-time members have recently passed away.  On June 22, Harry Petersen, recently of Rapid City, passed away at the age of 91.  The following excerpt from Harry's obituary was taken off of www.osheimschmidt.com: "He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He was also a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Survivors include his wife, Helen Petersen, Rapid City; two daughters, Jill Hinde and her husband Mike, DeMotte, Indiana and Joan Petersen, Rapid City; two sons. Harry S. Petersen, Jr., Las Vegas, Nev. And John Petersen and his wife, Gayle, Rapid City; three grandchildren, Steven Hinde and his wife, Sara, Iowa City, Ia., Susan Perry and her husband Matt, Chicago, IL., and Caitlin Petersen, Rapid City; and great granddaughter, Ellesse Perry, Chicago, IL."  "Interment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard, will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the New Horizons Band and the Shrine Crippled Children’s Travel Fund."

On June 27, Marlin Brown of Sioux Falls, passed away at the age of 90.  The following excerpt from Marlin's obituary was taken off of www.argusleader.com: "Marlin Leland Brown, 90, passed away June 27, 2009 at Good Samaritan Luther Manor. Born and raised in Sioux Falls, Marlin attended Longfellow Elementary School and graduated from George Washington High. As a nationally recognized clarinet player, he received a four year scholarship to Sioux Falls College, where he played in the municipal band, the college band, and the college orchestra."  Continuing, "After college, he became the band instructor at Bridgewater High School. He married his sweetheart, LaVonne Jorgenson which he often said was the smartest thing he ever did. During World War II, Marlin served as a Naval Officer under Admiral Nimitz in Guam and Pearl Harbor."  "Marlin leaves behind LaVonne, his wife of 68 years; two sons, Marlin and Eric; and four grandchildren, Martin, Genevieve, Dianne and Jeffrey. A celebration of his life is planned at a later time. An online registry can be viewed at www.heritagesfsd.com."

Our Brothers will be missed.

Upcoming engagements for the Big Band include our monthly Rock Band rehearsals, the Midwest, a potential entry into the annual Festival of Bands Parade and our annual DNR fundraiser dance.

June 2009 – Mike Kirkeby

The Shrine Circus was a success again.  Several Big Band members put their working gloves to lend a hand.  We were very pleased with Big Band participation as 11 members donated their time.  Thanks to Big Band members Gale Pifer, Mark Johnson, Don Dummermuth, Jim Kirkeby, Mike Kirkeby, Mark Pederson, Gene Bennett, Tom Long, Glen Rice and Don Salmon.

The Big Band performed our 32nd annual Parade of Music on May 1st for a packed house.  This year's Parade of Music was commemorated to 33-year Noble, and Big Band Director, George Gulson.  Five bands, all of which are comprised of Big Band members, performed for over six hours.  Nobles that traveled a significant distance to perform in the Parade of Music include: Lowell Arwood (Fairfax Station, VA), Stewart Christensen (Rapid City), Doug Lindner (Watertown), Bob Miller (Clarks Grove, MN), Jerry Pontius (Deadwood), Dwayne LaFave (De Smet), Tom Long (Estelline), Mark Neuharth and Scott Mallard (Huron).  It's an absolute treat to perform the annual Parade of Music for a packed house with Big Band members from both near and far.

The night kicked off with the Dixieland combo as the dancers made their way into the Shrine Center.  The next performance was by the concert band, in which Director George Gulson was presented with his commemorative plaque and speech.  Congratulations George!  After the concert band finished up, the Wally Jerome Orchestra, headed by Big Band member Wally Johnson, brought the dancers to their feet.  We would have needed a bigger dance floor to get more dancers out as the floor was packed, shoulder to shoulder with dancers.  The Nobles (17 piece dance band) followed the Wally Jerome Orchestra for an hour of big band dance music.  Big Band director Gale Pifer started directed the first half-hour before turning the baton over to Ken Rahn.  Gale will not be leaving us, he just wants to play his saxophone instead of directing.  Ken will assume the role as director of the Nobles.  Thanks for all of the great years as director, Gale; and congratulations to Ken  Rahn.  The night wrapped up with the newly formed rock band, headed up by Jim Kirkeby.  From Elvis to the Eagles, Johnny Cash to Wilson Pickett, the rock band capped off the night with thunder and lightning.

We had a lot of assistance from several El Riad units with respect to supporting our event, THANK YOU!  We really appreciate everything that El Riad does to support our unit.

While still recovering from the Parade of Music, the Big Band participated in the annual Cinco de Mayo kickoff on May 2.  Big Band member Dave Wagner organized for our group to play some popular Spanish tunes at Hy-Vee, Best Buy, Target and Falls Park.  These tunes were new to our 'repertoire', but Band members seemed to really enjoy playing the new charts.  Buenos dias muchachos!

Upcoming events for the Big Band include the Spring Ceremonial, several parades that have yet to be finalized and the Midwest Convention in Rochester.  We are looking forward to another eventful summer.

May 2009 – Mike Kirkeby

January 2009 – Mike Kirkeby

Happy New Year from the Big Band Unit!!!

2008 ended on a sad note for Big Band members.  Long time member Dale Tuttle passed away at the age of 93 on December 18th.  A December 22nd funeral was held at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls to celebrate Dale’s life.  Some quotes from Big Band members:  (Tom Long) “Dale joined the Shrine in 1961 and was in the band for a while then got inactive. In 1970 he came back to the band as an equipment man and was a darned good one. He did that until 4 or 5 years ago when he moved into the retirement home. He was always a good ticket seller for any event we had and put in a lot of time doing "footwork".”  (Don Leetch) “He was a very good friend of mine and one wonderful man.  He would help me with my bass horn all he could and we had a close relationship.  God bless him and his work with the Band.”

The following individuals make up the Big Band Board for the 2009 year:

o       Gene Bennett to remain president for a second year

o       Mike Kirkeby to remain vice president for a second year

o       Matt Johnson to serve second year of 3 year term as director

o       Mark Pederson to serve final year of 3 year term as director

o       Mark Johnson elected as director

o       Tom Long elected as secretary and treasurer

2009 started with the Rock Band practicing at the Shrine Center on 01/07.  The Rock Band played at the annual installation of officers at the Shrine center on 01/10.  We played 10-20 of our best numbers for those in attendance.  Please contact Jim Kirkeby (605) 582-6492 or Mike Kirkeby (605) 582-2844 if any you need any information regarding the Rock Band.  The band assembles the third Wednesday of each month at the Shrine Center from 7-9 PM for rehearsal and socialization.

The Big Band is pleased to welcome bass horn player Dave Stoterau into our group, welcome Dave!

Plans are currently underway to organize our annual Parade of Music, which will be held at the Shrine Center on Friday, May 1.  We are also working to put together a book to celebrate the Big Band’s 100 year anniversary.  These items are being collected by Big Band member Bob Miller.  Anyone with pictures, stories or memorabilia of the El Riad Big Band should contact Bob Miller at:

December 2008 – Mike Kirkeby

The Band assembled the best we could for the annual Christmas party and Fall Ceremonial.  Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we were not able to catch up with many of our west river and northeastern area band members.  I guess this is South Dakota; the snow can fly 7-8 months out of the year…which if often does.  A group of nearly 40 Band members and spouses, as well as a few of our Divan Nobles, were able to get together on 11/07 at the Brandon Steak House for socialization and dinner.

The Band participated in the Fall Ceremonial in usual fashion the following day.  We were delighted to hear that 4 or 5 of the new candidates expressed interested in the Big Band and Rock Band.  We are always interested in new members, even if you cannot remember which end of the horn to blow into.  If you have interest, we can re-educate you.

Following the first and third sections, the Band assembled for the yearly meeting to discuss business and elect officers.  The following individuals will make up the Band board for 2009:

o       Gene Bennett to remain president for a second year

o       Mike Kirkeby to remain vice president for a second year

o       Matt Johnson to serve second year of 3 year term as director

o       Mark Pederson to serve final year of 3 year term as director

o       Mark Johnson elected as director

o       Tom Long elected as secretary and treasurer

Upcoming events for the Band include monthly practices at the Shrine Center.  The content of these rehearsals varies; however, we’ve been concentrating on the rock band as of late.  We seem to always run into difficulties finding a drummer that can practice on Wednesday nights.  If you are a drummer (or any rock-band instrument player) and are interested in playing with the rock band, please contact Jim Kirkeby (605) 582-6492 or Mike Kirkeby (605) 582-2844 for more information.  The band assembles the third Wednesday of each month at the Shrine Center from 7-9 PM for rehearsal and socialization.

A newer tradition with the Band is to get together a group and play Christmas music in the Empire Mall during the shopping season.  We are currently talking with Empire Mall management and will probably be playing either 12/20 or 12/21 in the afternoon.

This concludes a great year for the Band.  We plan to continue exploring additional occasions in which to play our music in 2009.

September 2008 – Mike Kirkeby – NOTE that several of these are future events…so I had to do some speculation =)

Several members of the Big Band made their way to Aberdeen this month to represent our group, as well as El Riad, at the annual Midwest Convention.  The Big Band made appearances in two parades and as well as a combined concert with other Shrine units.  Other opportunities included playing some swing music in a local pub as well as in some nursing homes.

The Big Band put together their inaugural rock band, consisting of all Big Band members, and played during the August 20 social at the Shrine Center.  We walked through 10-15 8-piece band arrangements that were arranged by Big Band member Jim Kirkeby.  Our hope is to continue practicing and find other occasions to play for.  Any interest in the rock band should be directed toward Jim or Mike Kirkeby.

Plans continue to be made regarding the October 18th DNR Dance fundraiser.  Several Big Band members have been meeting monthly to finalize the details that will hopefully make the event a successful fundraiser.  Some of the instrumental members regarding the DNR fundraiser include: Rock Nelson, Gene Bennett, Tom Long, Gale Pifer, Mark Johnson, Matt Johnson, George Gulson, Mark Pederson and Mike Kirkeby.  Please visit website: http://www.dnrband.com/ to get a feel for the band’s repertoire.  They never disappoint!!!

August 2008 – Mike Kirkeby

The Big Band recently experienced one of its busiest couple of months that I can remember.  The 2008 summer kicked off early, where the Big Band hosted the annual Parade of Music.  The May 2nd event honored 31-year Big Band member Wally Johnson where attendees were treated to the Dixieland Combo, the Wally Jerome Orchestra, the Concert Band and the Big Band.  On May 17, the Big Band participated in the Spring Ceremonial with the traditional repertoire.  We took our small trailer to Hills, Minnesota for the annual Friendship Days parade on June 14.  There was a stellar Big Band member turn-out, which packed 13 members on the small trailer.  It was one of those rare occasions where we could all hear all parts.  Thankfully we’re all brothers because we were tight during that parade.  Friday, June 20 was a special day for the Big Band.  It was requested that the Big Band put together a Mason’s group to play at the Capitol Cornerstone Rededication in Pierre.  Several El Riad Big Band members attended this event, but this time in Mason’s regalia.  The following day, the Big Band took the big trailer to Tea to participate in the annual Teapot Days parade.  16 members of the Big Band filled out the big trailer.  Following the parade, Potentate Keith jumped up on the trailer and notified the Big Band that this was El Riad’s greatest parade turnout, with respect to number of units participating, (18 units COOL)!  The ‘iron-man’ months concluded with a Canaries pre-game concert on June 24 at the Sioux Falls Stadium.

As we enter midsummer, the Big Band will be holding monthly meetings to discuss upcoming events; including, the Fall Ceremonial, the DNR dance fundraiser, the Midwest Convention, the annual Shrine Football game, next year’s Parade of Music and the 100th anniversary of the El Riad Big Band, which will occur in 2010.

April 2008 – Mike Kirkeby

The Big Band has been very busy preparing for the 31st annual Parade of Music, which will be held at the Shrine Center on Friday, May 2.  Doors will open at 6:00 with a welcoming by the Dixieland band.  Appearances by the concert band, the Wally Jerome Orchestra and Big Band will fill the night.  This year’s Parade of Music will be dedicated to (sorry, it’s a secret).  Tickets are $10 each and may be purchased from any member of the Big Band.  The traditional bar will be open; popcorn and BBQ’s will also be available.

In addition to the Parade of Music preparations, a group of members from the Big Band got together and played at a Sioux Falls Stampede hockey game in February.  Other upcoming events for the Big Band include the Spring Ceremonial and various parades throughout the summer months.

March 2008 – Mike Kirkeby

The Big Band unit is currently preparing for the annual Parade of Music, which is to be held on May 2nd at the Shrine Center.  Brothers Gale Pifer and Gary Holman have been collaborating to put together monthly rehearsals this winter, in which the group has been going through a number of big band charts as well as sharpening up the concert band numbers.  Event tickets will be available shortly.  Units interested in purchasing tables at the event may contact Mike Kirkeby at: mikekirkeby@yahoo.com.  Two weeks after the Parade of Music, the Big Band will again assemble at the annual Spring Ceremonial.  We look forward to entertaining you through music!!!

January/February 2008 – Mike Kirkeby

As 2007 winds down, the Big Band concludes the year with some traditional events as some not-so-traditional events.  For the first time, The Big Band took part in the annual Festival of Bands Parade, which coincides with Augustana’s Homecoming.

The Band had a full crew and entertained the parade-goers with traditional crowd pleasing numbers.  The Big Band played also participated in the annual Fall Ceremonial and held its yearly meeting in which to discuss business.  The Big Band is pleased to usher in new president Gene Bennett as Gale Pifer’s term comes to a close.  We are all grateful for the leadership provided by Gale and look forward to Gene taking the reins for the foreseeable future.  Others elected include Matt Johnson, Director and Mike Kirkeby, Vice President.  As one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) units of El Riad, it was mentioned at the annual meeting that The Big Band will be 100 years old in 2010!  Discussion is already underway regarding ways to celebrate our centennial within El Riad.  Finally, 10 members of The Big Band took part in a newer annual event by playing Christmas music in the Empire Mall.  We braved the holiday crowd on December 16 and brought cheer to the shoppers with a brass group consisting of a tuba, 3 trombones and 6 trumpets.  Needless to say, our sound filled up the Mall!

We are pleased to announce new member Jim Labesky into The Big Band.  With a heavy heart, we are sad to say that member Max Christol has passed away.  Max will be missed.  The Big Band looks forward to entertaining you in 2008!!!

September/October 2007 – Mike Kirkeby

The summer is winding down and the El Riad Big Band continues to be busy.

On September 1st, the Swing Band played at the annual Shriners Football game at Howard Wood Field.  The Swing Band will also make an appearance at the annual Potentate’s ball on September 22.  The Big Band is currently preparing for the annual Parade of Music, which will be held on September 28.  The Big Band has typically hosted this event in the spring, but opted to try something a bit different this year.  The doors will open at the Shrine Center at 6:30 PM with dancing beginning at 7 and continuing until 11.  Entertainment will include: Dixieland Combo, The Wally Jerome Band, the El Riad Concert Band, the “Nobles” (18-piece big band) as well as dancing demonstrations throughout the night by DANCE Ballroom & Studio.  This year’s Parade of Music will pay special tribute to three 40-year band members; Don Dummermuth, Roger Kehm and Randall Lampe.  We hope to see you there!

Other upcoming events for the Big Band include an appearance in the annual Festival of Bands Parade on October 6th and the Fall Ceremonial on November 17th.

August 2007 – Gale Pifer/Mike Kirkeby

It’s been a busy summer thus far for the El Riad Big Band, kicking off with the NDR Fund Raiser June 15.

Thanks to wonderful support from our fellow Shriners, the first ever rock and roll dance was very successful.  The next day, the El Riad Shrine Big Band played in a parade in Tea.

Upcoming events include the Sept. 1 Shrine Football game at which the Swing Band will perform; the Sept. 22 Potentate’s Ball; and then the Shrine Parade of Music, Sept. 28.  A rehearsal is scheduled for all band members the night before the Parade of Music.

October 6 the big band will perform in Sioux Falls for the Festival of Music, then the band’s annual meeting will be held Nov. 16 with the Fall Ceremonial to be held the next day.
